The Morphling is a ranged agility hero known for his extreme flexibility and nearly unlimited magic damage scaling. He can shapeshift into a chosen enemy hero, copying their abilities and attributes. Morphling excels at adapting to any situation by using his opponents’ weapons and spells against them or boosting his health and damage in a fight.
Abilities
Waveform: Morphling dissolves into liquid and surges forward, damaging enemy units in his path. He is invulnerable during Waveform and attacks all enemies it goes through with a penalty. This ability is excellent for initiation, chasing, and farming creep waves, despite its limited mana pool[1][4].
Adaptive Strike: This spell has two components: one based on agility and the other on strength. The agility-based component deals base magic damage plus a value determined by his agility, multiplied by at least 0.5 times, with a maximum multiplier of 2.5 if his agility is 50% higher than his strength. The strength component stuns the target for up to three seconds using the same mechanics as the agility component[1][2].
Attribute Shift: Morphling can gradually shift points from strength to agility and vice versa. Leaning towards strength increases his HP regeneration and maximum HP, while shifting to agility increases his attack damage, attack speed, and armor. Both shifts feed directly into Adaptive Strike’s mechanics, allowing Morphling to switch between high magic damage and a long-duration stun[1][2].
Morph: This ultimate ability allows Morphling to transform into an imperfect clone of a targeted enemy hero, copying their non-ultimate abilities, attributes, movement speed, attack type, and attack range. This ability can turn the tide of battle by giving the enemy team a taste of their own medicine[1][2].
Item Build
Morphling’s item build focuses on increasing his attributes to reach his full potential. He needs plenty of bonus stats to support his abilities, especially Adaptive Strike and Attribute Shift. Protective items like Linken’s Sphere or Black King Bar are crucial to prevent silences and disables, which can leave him vulnerable[2].
Early Game:
- Power Treads: Provides extra stats for cheap and allows easy use of restorative items.
- Magic Wand: Heals him for his entire health bar if all points are in agility and he has a decent number of charges.
Mid Game:
- Linken’s Sphere: Blocks problematic single-target spells and provides additional stats and regen.
- Black King Bar: Gives magic immunity and additional strength, but is less ideal compared to Linken’s Sphere.
Late Game:
- Ethereal Blade: Combines with Adaptive Strike to deal massive damage, making Morphling a powerful ganker and utility support hero. However, its effectiveness drops off as the game progresses[2].
Combo and Counter
Combo:
- Initiate with Waveform.
- Hit a soft target with full-agility Adaptive Strike.
- Finish with right clicks.
Counter:
- Burst damage is particularly effective against Morphling due to his small health pool.
- Exploit his tiny mana pool by preventing him from using his spells.
- Reduce his armor through abilities or items to make him more vulnerable to physical damage carries[2].
